Professor Chien-Ping Ju and Professor Jiin-Huey Chern Lin from the Materials Department of National Cheng Kung University have combined Professor Jing-Wei Lee, a plastic surgeon of National cheng Kung University Hospital(current director of National cheng Kung University Hospital), Professor Chyun-Yu Yang, a doctor of orthopedics of Kuo General Hospital (former director of National cheng Kung University Hospital), and former spine surgeon of National cheng Kung University Hospital, Dr. Ruey-Mo Lin (currently the president of Tainan Municipal An-Nan Hospital) and other experts formed a cross-disciplinary research team to proactively devote in the research and development of biomedical materials and medical materials.
One of the products, "calcium-based bonegraft", has been obtained in Taiwan, Europe, the United States, and other countries' patents. This product is superior to similar products in Europe and the United States in terms of absorption behavior and new bone formation rate. The R&D team used artificial synthesis to develop two calcium-based bone substitutes, granule, and cement, which are similar to human bone components. Ezechbone® granule can be directly implanted into the bone defect; Ezechbone® cement can be injected into the bone defect using minimally invasive surgery. These two calcium-based bone substitutes have excellent osteoinductive properties, and both animal experiments and orthopedic/dental clinical follow-up have confirmed that they can be effectively and quickly replaced by new bone.
The research and development team of National cheng Kung University has transferred the results and guided the establishment of Joy Medical Devices Co., Ltd. The first-generation product (Ezechbone®) produced by Joy Medical Devices has been approved by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, and many domestic medical centers have also begun to use it. In order to further move towards globalization, this technology/product will also seek cooperation with the international medical material industry to jointly develop the international market.
